I was going to title this post “A mammogram done with a 3D machine does not hurt”, but I have found some who say it still does. That said, all agree it hurts less. The reason is the plate pivots. You know that plate that you stick your breast onto before the top plate comes down and squishes it together? Yes that bit of pivot can result in no or less pain!
I changed insurance companies this year so I had to go some place new for my yearly mammogram. I had been going to an imaging center for years.
My insurance wanted me to go to a mammography center at a hospital. Since I am in the know of breast centers I opted for the suite at the new cancer wing of a hospital.
There is a warming cupboard for the changing gowns. Yes a warm gown to slip into! On the opposite end of the room there was a coffee bar, complete with half and half, regular, and decaf coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
The other big difference for me from the imaging center was the waiting room. It was empty. This facility has 2 technicians so they only schedule as many women at a time as the techs can accommodate. What this means is the waiting room is not filled with crying/anxious women. I am not being insensitive, as a breast cancer survivor, I was once one of the crying women and still am an anxious one.
Here is the big, really big, huge difference; the mammogram for me did not hurt. Of course I had taken Advil prior but I think I could have skipped it.
How much did it not hurt? You know when the tech asks you to hold your breath? On non-3D machinery that direction was really unnecessary because the pain was so sharp I always took an intake of breath and could not breathe anyways!
With the 3D, no pain so no sharp intake of gasping breath. Indeed I had to truly hold my breath!
Have you tried a 3D mammogram? Did you find it painless? Was your experience similar to mine?
