Gymnastics is my favorite Summer Olympic sport. I have been working on my dismount stand with arms in a V for Victory and eyes elevated towards the heavens. I have noticed that my arm flab is still moving when the rest of my body is still and also I am not that keen to arch my back like the Olympic athletes. I think I can make up points with my application of body glitter!
I am amazed by the gymnast’s sense of balance and awareness. How do they not become totally disoriented? I have heard some say that they practice their routines so much it is just habit and not every move is even thought of individually any longer. That concept amazes me too. Pointed toes, erect posture, smiles while balancing, vaulting and being upside down is incredible!
I am a huge Olympic fan. I attended with my husband the winter Olympics in 1994 in Norway. It was a different time. Pre 9-11, we never worried about terrorists. It was still a time when the athletes were not professionals and doping was not known to be common.
In 1994 we didn’t have to worry about the purity of our water or a devastating illness like the Zika virus at the host city. We didn’t have to worry about transportation being completed or various other hardships that Rio is enduring to pull the games together.
I am cheering for Rio as much as I will be cheering for our athletes. In 1994 the Olympics was fun for the host country and little drama and politics for the athletes and as a spectator, it was a blast! I wish as close to that experience as possible for Rio, the athletes and the spectators.
Will you be watching the Olympics? Have you been practicing your dismount? I may be wearing some glitter for the next 2 weeks, how about you?
