I have a digital clock on my nightstand. When I wake up and read the digits I do the Math to translate to my mind what time it is. For example if my clock says 6:40 I have to translate that to 20 to 7. If I have an appointment at 9 AM I do the Math to figure out if I can snooze a bit longer.
I need a lot of sleep. 8 hours is what works best for me. I get frequent headaches when I don’t get enough sleep. With that in mind if I wake up at 5AM but know I didn’t get to sleep until 11PM I do the math and roll over and try to sleep for another hour at least.
Doing math while I would prefer to be sleeping is not something I set out to do. It is something I just do! I know I am not alone in this math exercise in the mornings or am I? I asked my husband if he does morning math and I got his answer du jour, “I am retired”! So I asked before he retired, did he wake up doing sleep math and his answer was “no”!
Full disclosure I like math. It was one of my favorite electives in college. I love a good research study with graphs and statistics. In my former careers I would read these and discuss them until I saw the glaze over others’ eyes!
I really can’t remember a time in my life when I did not do sleep math. Now in my dotage I think it is time to stop! I am starting with trying to find a nightstand electric clock with a numbered face big enough to be seen with just one eye open. Roman numerals are out of the question because that would mean more translation!
My sleep math, waking up doing math, is a habit I am trying t break. I should have made it a New Year’s resolution.
Do you do sleep math? Do you instinctively know when it is time to wake up with out doing math?
