Everyone knows Alex has pancreatic cancer. This cancer is not one of the good ones. Of course no cancer is good but some have a higher survival rate. Some have a longer life span living with the disease, but not pancreatic. Alex was diagnosed at stage 4, also not a good diagnosis for any cancer!
Alex has shown grace using his celebrity to be a spokesperson for the disease. He is definitely the poster patient for someone living with cancer and going through treatments.
I truly wish Mr. Trebek well. I wish the best for his family. I think he will leave a wonderful legacy as a TV personality and a spokesperson for pancreatic cancer.
I have issue with the TV coverage of his cancer journey. Reporters are quick to mention that even through all his treatments he “never missed a day of work”!
Somehow I don’t think Alex works everyday. Somehow I don’t think he works 8 hours a day either. Saying he hasn’t missed a day of work is great for Mr. Trebek but lousy for other cancer patients. Patients who don’t have the energy to even do their commute to work never mind do the actual work feel less. People who work with these patients hear about Alex Trubek and think their coworker should man or woman-up and come to work like Alex Trebek!
It is hard to understand cancer side effects unless you have gone through treatments or witnessed it first hand. I don’t want to diminish the fortitude of Alex Trebek but I don’t want him to be the role model of all cancer patients and their relationship with their jobs as they go through treatments.
