His Mother, who loved to be dramatic, was always vague about her parents’ history. Other relatives gave many different stories about lineage with Irish and English being the most common. It was always speculated that there was some Native American ancestor. His maternal grandfather according to his Mother, “just showed up off the plains”. With my husband’s dark skin and black hair, Native American seemed probable.
My husband’s father was from Sweden. He was first generation. No vagueness or speculation, all Swedish.
A friend of mine did her ancestry as a lark. She was certain her parents were Irish and Scottish, heavy on the Scottish. She and her siblings all have names that reflect their heritage. When she got back her ancestry she did not have an ounce of Irish or Scottish! Her brother insisted it was wrong and he sent in his DNA to another site. Same results!
Since both parents are dead, my friend and her siblings speculated that when their grandparents came to this country they made up their ethnic background. They were all German. Many times in history being German in this country was not ideal!
Another friend of mine decided to test her ancestry. Her father was from the Middle East and her Mother was English. When she got the results back there was not an ounce of Middle Eastern! Same as my other friend, she thought the test incorrect tried another company and received the same results. Her younger brother sent in his DNA to third company that showed almost 50% Middle Eastern.
My friend speculates her Mother was pregnant with her when she married her father from another man. It was after WWII and quickie marriages were common. Since both her parents are dead she has many questions she wished she could have asked her Mom as an adult.
Because I had these surprising stories from my friends, my husband was crestfallen to discover not one ounce of Native American. He is pretty much 50% Swedish and a mix of British Isles, and Northern European. Mundane, no surprises, no drama!
Have you had your DNA tested? Any shocking news or just as you suspected?
