I don’t drink so I behind in realizing how much beer and cider have taken over the beverage aisles in the grocery store. Trendy non-alcoholic drinks like root beers and sipping vinegars are right there squeezing out sodas. The whole section has exploded in offering your beverage selection!
Recently a neighbor helped me with a task and I wanted to reward him with a 6 pack of beer because I know he drinks beer. That is when I was overwhelmed with all the varieties. Seriously flavored beer, local beer, big bottle beer, bottles with beautiful designs, domestic, imported, the choices seemed endless.
From the beer aisle I called a mutual friend and he gave me a few suggestions including some cider suggestions. Like the beer selection the cider varieties were plentiful with their bottles being a bit more colorful.
Growing hops is all the rage for a lot of gardeners and make your own beer enthusiasts. Our climate seems ideal. Apple orchards still sell apples but many make their own cider too. Pear orchids have found a niche with local distilleries. I have to admit I am really not current with the whole local alcohol scene.
I asked the advice from a friend who drinks how she makes her choice. She told me she buys one bottle of a beer or a cider to decide if she likes it.
My logical follow up question was “then you buy the one you like?” She laughed and said she has been doing this for 3 years because there are always new beers or ciders to try and she doesn’t drink every day! 3 years and she hasn’t run out of new choices!
To me, my friend’s advise sounded like a lot of fun. I decided I would adopt her method with the non-alcoholic varieties. I started with the sipping vinegars. Turmeric sipping vinegar is not my favorite but there are lots more to try!
Have you been overwhelmed in the beer/cider aisle? What are your favorites? Have you tried the sipping vinegars or other non-alcoholic beverages?
