Recently I have been thinking about choices I made through the years that literally decades later have come home to roost. That is chicken talk for choices made earlier; even decades earlier that have an outcome now.
30 years ago my husband and I had our home built. We never at the time thought we would stay here forever but now we intend to age out here. We built a small, 1800 square foot one level home.
At the time people told us we were crazy to use so much land for a one level home. We knew what we wanted and that choice has been one of the best choices to come to roost positively.
Another good choice I made was to not go back to work fulltime after my cancer. Instead I took the entrepreneurial leap to start my own business. I have never regretted that decision.
Of course not all my choices have worked out as well as the house and the career leap. I feel I learned from my less than prudent choices and did not repeat a poor choice again.
Let’s face it life is complicated. A well-designed plan for your life can easily go south. Learning from poor choices is not easy.
Whether it is the partner you choose, your occupation, your relationship with your children or parents or family, the time you devote to your health, can change every day, or every decade. Those choices made can play a dramatic part of your life today.
In the business of life I will often forget but try thinking about today. To think about the choices I am making today, right now that will come home to roost tomorrow or 10 years from now.
Setting values and priorities and choosing what is important today and hence in the future is never easy. It would be great if we could see into the future!
Have your choices come home to roost?
