I am a big fan of Chinese Medicine. I talked about my affection for acupuncture before but I haven’t mentioned until now Cupping and Gua Sha. All 3 procedures make a nice cocktail for health.
Gua Sha is a scraping that is thought to facilitate toxin release. It is used in areas where there is tightness. What looks like a Chinese spoon is used to scrape your skin at the designated areas. It doesn’t really hurt but after, the sight is very raw looking.
Cupping is taking what looks to be juice glasses heated and stuck onto your skin. The cups form suction. This is often on the back. They stay there for about 10-20 minutes. The goal is to eliminate stagnation. After the procedure the skin looks like giant hickies!
Michael Phelps was seen with cupping aftermath during the Olympics. Gwyneth Paltrow has been seen wearing a gown with her back showing cupping signs. Cupping is less Western medicine documented as successful but Chinese practitioners certainly believe in it.
When I was going through chemotherapy I did all 3 Chinese medicine procedures fairly often. Fast-forward to now and I had my first 3 Chinese combo procedures in a decade. After that appointment I was totally wiped out. I went straight home, took a bath and a nap! I forgot! Note to self do not make the appointment mid day and expect to get anything done the rest of the day!
3-weeks later I went in again for another treatment. This time it was late afternoon. I told the acupuncturist to go a bit easier! She was thrilled that I had such an immediate result from the session. She has prescribed for me a Chinese herb remedy. These are not over the counter herbs but a formula mixed for my health goals.
SO of course the question is “Am I feeling Better?” My answer is yes. I feel a boost in my metabolism, less tightness in my neck and no migraines! It is an ongoing treatment plan that I am hoping to report positive results for the remainder of 2018.
Have you tried Cupping or Gua Shaw?
