I have a flagpole near my blueberries. The theory is flying a flag will deter birds from eating blueberries. One of the rules to flying an American Flag is to take it down at night or have it lighted. I don’t have the flagpole lit and it is a bother to take down and put up a flag. That is one of the reasons I don’t fly the American Flag often.
The other reason is my husband made some ornamentation on top of the flagpole. It is a cat on top of a flying goose. The cat is metal. I am known to leave a flag up for a month. This winter we had lots of wind. I didn’t change the flag and the cat ripped it to shreds.
I don’t want to say that the cat is anti Trump but it has been up for several years and it has never taken to ripping and gnashing and tearing since this past January. Yes we had more wind than normal but it does seem a bit coincidental.
Early on when we put up the flagpole we had our flags stolen. Kids would jump our fence and take down the flag. We lost a World Map Flag, and 2 Pirate Flags. I was pissed off! I even called the police. This was our third stolen flag! They took my report. They said there had been a surge of thefts on American Flags. When I told them mine was of the Jolly Roger, I heard a sigh on the other end of the line.
I put up signs around the hood warning that the last Pirate Flag was cursed and when stolen bad things would happen to the individual or individuals who stole it. I suggested a return and no questions would be asked. It was not returned. After this last theft my husband put up his art adornment.
We haven’t had a theft of our flag since the cat and goose went up. Is it because there are different kids in the neighborhood or is it the fierceness of the cat? I have not bought another Pirate flag to test my theory. This Memorial Day I will fly the American flag for the day and hope it is not too windy.
Do you fly any flags?
