A few years ago I noticed a trend in my grocery stores. They opened up wine bars in the stores. I guess if grocery shopping is just too exhausting you can stop and sip a glass of wine or drink a beer or hard cider. Once fortified you can continue the task of shopping and buying your groceries.
I don’t get it, I really don’t. Why would I want to sit at a bar overlooking the produce or the reading glasses display while my eggs are warming up to room temperature and I have to drive home? Really I am asking! Why wouldn’t I stop in at a wine bar before I went grocery shopping?
To the store’s credit they close the wine bar at 8 PM. They also list the alcohol content of the beverages they have on tap. Those with high alcohol can only be served once. Of course that doesn’t mean the customer can’t have another lower alcohol content beverage. Customers can also buy something from the deli or grab and go and eat their dinner, snack, or lunch right there in the store.
Grocery stores have the coffee bars or Starbucks inside the stores. They have an eating section for people to enjoy a quick bite. So I guess it is no surprise that a wine bar should be included in ways to make you stay at your grocery store a little longer? Really, I am guessing!
Awhile back when Sushi conveyer belt was all the rage, a couple of grocery stores put in a conveyer belt with chairs. I am not sure if they are still there. I do see lots of sushi items in the grab and go section and even a few Sushi chefs.
One store has a rooftop bar area for eating and drinking. While most people love a rooftop, it is only 2 stories high. Granted overlooking a busy street I find more entertaining then looking at the produce display, but for the love of God it is still atop a grocery store!
Have you seen wine bars in your grocery stores? What do you think of them?
