Getting up at night can be detrimental to your health. A friend of mine got up to go to the bathroom and fell and cracked a few ribs. As we age it seems both men and women get up during the night to use the bathroom more frequently than when we were younger!
I have heard others talk about breaking a toe, or an ankle as they stumble over their dog, cat, or clothes on the way to or from their bathroom. I know for certain other people break body parts yet will not admit it happened on a bathroom run!
The dangers to getting up at night are comparable to driving drunk. You are not seeing clearly, you are not very alert and your balance is not that great!
So what to do to prevent these kind of falls?
- A rope line from your bed to the bathroom
- A lighted path like on airplanes
- A handrail from your bed to the bathroom
- Crawl from your bed to the bathroom
- Buddy system. Tether yourself to your partner
- Motion detected lights from your bed to the bathroom
I have not seen any home décor touting a rope line or handrail system from bed to bath. I bet I could get sensor automation lights embedded in the floor moldings but I think it may be a tad expensive. Crawling is of course not a bad option but my pets will think it is playtime. My husband gets up more often so there is no way I am tethering to him!
I have purchased several motion sensor night-lights. Some are really bright, too bright for the bed to toilet shuffle. Others are too big; they just don’t fit on outlets well. Some are way too sensitive, going on an off by my cats.
I have looked into the lighted toilet bowl. It has a glow that is too much like a video screen for my taste.
My quest for the perfect motion sensor night-light continues. If you have found one let me know. I am rather found of all my body parts in working order!
