We all know that the stars buy their own Hollywood Walk of Fame Stars but what about other honors for non-celebrities? Yes we can all buy some notoriety, honors or Vanity press. Sometimes you have to be nominated or asked to have this honor bestowed upon you, all for a fee.
I was welcomed a few years back to Who’s Who in America. For my name to be included and to use their credentials all I had to pay was a mere $500.00. If I wanted to buy the book, or the plaque, there was an additional fee. I declined
My Company and I have received some other awards that are not paid for rewards. They are competitions or recognition that reward merit in the field no strings attached or fees paid. Often reward ceremonies costs and you are invited to fill a table or make a donation. Sometimes these luncheons or dinners are fun, inspirational, or they also can be a bit tedious and boring.
Locally there is an organization called the Royal Rosarians. They are goodwill ambassadors for the city of Portland. They march in the big Rose Festival parades and are very visible during May and June with all the Portland Rose Festival happenings.
The Royal Rosarians wear white wool suits and straw hats. They also have capes. To be a Royal Rosarian you have to buy your custom made suit, specific hat, cape, gloves and shoes. This is not an inexpensive undertaking!
Who wouldn’t want to march in a parade? Who wouldn’t want to be a goodwill ambassador for a city they love? But this is Portland Oregon and sometimes it rains in June and if you are wearing a custom made white wool suit you know you will end up smelling like a big wet dog! Sometimes it is very hot in June in Portland Oregon and after walking 4.2 miles through downtown wearing a white wool suit you will be very hot!
Women were not allowed to become Royal Rosarians for 82 years. Unfortunately the suits are still men’s’ styled so most of the women look a bit boxy in their doubled breasted white wool suits. Inroads into a style flattering for women still need to be achieved!
A friend has been courted to become a Royal Rosarian. She would be a great goodwill ambassador but she is not willing to undertake the financial commitment. I don’t blame her a bit!
Have you ever been approached for some ‘Vanity’ honor?
