Menopause happens and close to 80% of women will experience hot flashes or night sweats or both. This is life. It is natural. It is not fun, but it should not become fodder for shaming!
Night sweats are hot flashes that occur at night. For the sake of clarity I will just use the name hot flashes but know I am including night sweats as well. Flashes, or flushes bother some women at night more than during the day. Others are the opposite or equally disturbed day and night.
I am sick and tired of hearing women say they do yoga, or run, or weight train and their hot flashes have disappeared. Other women will praise a diet of no dairy, no meat etc. to alleviate their flashes. I say good for them, but some women nothing helps. NOTHING HELPS! The shaming of telling other women to just do what they do will stop their flashing is ridiculous! All that happens is the teller feels superior and the recipient of her directive feels shamed!
There is a huge industry of over the counter remedies for hot flashes. Again I have heard women praise the benefits of these product/herbs as the way to curb the flashes. I am not a supporter of these products because many are unregulated for safety and actual ingredient composition. Note, there is no cure for hot flashes. If there was a cure everyone woman over the age of 40 would know!
Here is the best bit of advice if you are having hot flashes: Talk with your doctor. Find a women’s health menopause doctor who is an expert on the subject. As my friend Ellen Dolgen, a menopause expert and vagina whisper says, “Suffering in silence is out”.
Find out if Hormone replacement therapy is right for you from your doctor. Your menopause expert doctor will never shame you only give you choices. Once you have some recommendations in hand, talk to your family especially if you can, your Mother. Often the time and duration of menopause symptoms is similar in families. Menopause side effects like flashes can last for years. The symptoms can intensify or lessen.
