My husband loves cars. He marries his cars. He does not like to sell his cars. The love of my husband’s car life is his Land Rover. I never realized how strong his love affair with Land Rovers was until 1993. That year Land Rover exported 550 Land Rover Defender 110 models to the US. My husband found out and he had to have one.
We name all our cars and when we bought this Rover we named it Captain Hastings. We named it after Hercule Poirot’s best friend from the Agatha Christie novels.
Late 1993 an invitation came to come to England to the Land Rover Factory and off road course. Of course my husband’s heartstrings were tugged to the UK. There at the Eastnoor castle, he cavorted with other Land Rover enthusiasts.
Over the years Captain Hastings has been a fun car. Off roading, camping, skiing, the rig is a beast but it can go places other cars dare not traverse!! There is a winch on the front and my husband is ready to use it pull out trees and shrubs for neighbors and friends. It gets stares and notes left on the windshield. People will wait next to it in a shopping center parking lot, fascinated by it. Often it is like living with a celebrity
Other Land Rover Cars have made their way into our lives, but only Captain Hastings, bought new, has stayed in the family.
Because my husband’s love affair with Land Rover is still an ongoing relationship, he has found more Land Rovers via English television series. Our family sets up viewing with guessing how many times a Land Rover is in a scene. The show Vera, will often win. Rosemary and Thyme get extra points when they actually discuss their rig. The Coroner and Death in Paradise get honorable mentions.
Vera is one of my favorite shows. Easily there could be a drinking game every time she says, “Pet”, or “Love”, or “Hmmm”. When she uses one of these phrases while driving her Land Rove, it is extra points!
Do you have a favorite English TV series? Any featuring a Land Rover? Anyone else have a love affair with his or her cars?
