Oh Wisdom, Oh age, it is great when they combine together! I know I am old, not getting old but in the realm of oldness. I am old because I forgot to learn from my mistakes. Funny antidote mistakes but they really could have gone sideways and not be very funny mistakes at all. Mistakes that I should have known better, but I am old and forgot!!!
Here is the proof in the pudding or why I know I am old and I better get a tight rein on myself:
A new park opened close by so my husband and I thought why not explore it with a hike? It is a rock climbing area. We both assumed, yes I know the assume spelling breakdown, like other rock climbing parks there would be a trail that circles the perimeter of said rocks to view the climbers. With that in mind we did not bring much of anything with us and wore sneakers.
I must digress here and admit that many hikes around here are rough and tumble. Hikers must be prepared with water; food, backpacks, proper shoes and hiking poles are not a bad idea either. I scoff; yes scoff when hikers fall prey to the perils of the hike because they are unprepared.
Who is eating her scoffs now? That would be me!
The trail went straight up on loose rocks to a ledge and circled the rocks while in the rocks. We erroneously thought it would level out and we just went up the wrong side of the trail. The climbers could not help us when asked if there was an easy path because well they are Rock Climbers!
The long and short of it is we made it up and down and it was a good vista but… Part of the hike I had to scoot on my bottom to get down and going up basically crawl on all 4!
Moral of the story is to be prepared. We used to always go on outings over prepared, but we are old! So did we learn from our mistake? NO. A month later we set on a hike we did about 25 years ago. Same thing: sneakers, no poles and flimsy bag with water. It wasn’t as dramatic a hike as the rock one but we were under prepared again!
I swear the next hike I have learned my lesson and I will be over prepared, if I remember! Have you noticed you fly by the seat of your pants more?
