This summer I became addicted to yard sales. It is my latest addiction. If you were to ask me 10 or even 5 years ago to go to a few garage sales I would have said firmly “NO”! How times change. What got me first was when a friend became an empty nester. Then a friend’s father died and he was a bit of a hoarder. Then a friend’s Mother needed to go to assisted living. All of these friends were left to downsize and sort through and decided to do a garage sale.
I have helped 2 different friends with garage sales 3 times each. This summer was the last sale for each of them. The stuff is finally sold or given to charity. Garage or yard sales are a lot of work. It is more fun when you have someone to help and I do find it fun.
Not to come across totally beneficent, I work for food or goods. At my friend’s last week she bought my dinner and made homemade ice cream. For the other friend she let me have what I liked which was substantial. Table cloth, dish towels, out door dishes, and more!
Going to yard sales I find fun. The best are those who are moving or downsizing or like my friend selling off an estate. I made a list of things I was looking for and although it took me 2 years, I found everything on my list! If you are inclined to decorate for Christmas of Halloween, the items are plentiful and cheap!
Thread and fabric has been a real score for me this summer. My partner in yard saling has redecorated her family room with yard sale finds. We usually set out Friday mornings. Since we both are self employed and summer is slow it is 2-3 hours of entertainment just in a 3 mile radius of our homes.
With fall here, the sales will die down. Once the rains come no one has a sale until spring. Will I have withdrawal pains from my addiction? I think I will. I am sure I will think of things I need and I am now so spoiled I will not want to pay retail.
Do you yard sale? Have you hosted a garage sale? Are you too addicted?
