Last Sunday I heard the wrenching cries of a Mother for her child outside the grocery store. The woman was screaming “Michael” and crying and walking up and down in front of the front doors. I heard the screams from across the parking lot. Her screams were heartfelt desperation screams. By the time I got to the front door, some women were comforting her and store security was there as I witnessed the reunion of Mother and Son.
The store is big and it was very busy. The parking lot is always crowded and it was packed. Everyone can empathize with the situation. It ended happily.
Wednesday I was at another grocery store. This is a smaller grocery store with a more spacious parking lot. As I was walking to the entrance, I heard a woman screaming for her son. She was crying out “Michael” in gut wrenching cries and sobs.
Like on Sunday, some women going into the store gathered around her and store security people came running out to assist her. By the time I entered the store she was reunited with her son. She was sobbing and her son was hugging her. It was the same Mother and Son!
I got a good look at the woman and the boy this time and was surprised that close up they were both older than I originally thought. The boy was closer to 12 than 6 and the Mother looked closer to 50 than 40. I could be wrong but the boy really looked old enough to not wonder into a moving car in the parking lot. Also this store is out in suburbia and sits way off the main road to warrant any concern about being hit by a bus!
In the store as I did my shopping I saw the Mother and Son a few times. Each time the boy was sampling some tasties and not staying very close to his Mother.
As I left the store I wondered what’s in it for her to lose her son at 2 stores with in 4 days? Is it the attention? Is it Munchhausen by proxy? Is it a scam?
I am leaning toward the scam and think there may have been another person or more in the store shoplifting while she was doing her distraction act.
What do you think?
