I mentioned a while back that I would stop coloring my hair when I reached a certain age. I keep pushing up the age. Now once again as I celebrate another birthday I am challenged with the dilemma of my hair!
Both my parents had snow-white gorgeous white hair. My sister, only 5 years older has the same stunning white hair. My hairstylist who knows my sister says not so fast if I think my white hair will be similar.
You see I am told it is still really dark brown in the back and spotted brown, gray and white in the front. When I lost all my hair to chemotherapy it grew back spotted. Dalmatian looking hair is only attractive on dogs.
A blonde friend whose hair is turning a nice gray. Also I have a brunette friend who has gorgeous silver streaking her hair. I am not that lucky. Cue soundtrack from the musical Hair!
So I have chose to continue to color my hair but I am letting it go natural curl. When I want smooth hair it means a lot of product and a lot of time. I have to put the dry hair in hot rollers than use a flat iron to smooth it out. Every. Day. It is a process I have been doing for the last decade and a half, since my hair grew back and I decided to let it grow long.
I have never had wash and go hair. I am always amazed and jealous at how many women can get by with a good haircut and a little product to get a hairstyle. In the 1970’s I used to iron my long hair. When I smelled that burnt hair spell I knew I was done. In the 1990’s I wore my hair short because I was travelling so much for business I needed an easy style to take on the road and look professional.
By leaving my hair natural I just have to use a lot of product on it so it remains in the same zip code and I don’t have to buy it another seat for it on a plane. For now that is my compromise with my hair dilemma.
Are you coloring your hair? Do you have a stop date? Have you let your hair go natural?
