September 5th, 2017, is the 40th anniversary of the Voyager 1 space launch by NASA. 40 years later and the Voyager 1 is still in orbit and reporting back data to NASA. So what does this have to do with travel sleepwear? It is the speculation of advances in technology that 40 years ago we all harbored. Travel Sleepwear at least has come to some fruition of the daydreams of “40 years from now”.
I remember the launch. It really sparked my curiosity and wondering about the future. Back in 1977, 40 years seemed to me to be an immense amount of time.
So here we are 40 years later and technology has indeed had some incredible advances. Dear to my heart is fabric technology. I remember wearing cotton and wool for skiing as a kid and freezing if I exerted myself. Pajamas were flannel and if you got too hot you got all sweaty! Now we have high tech fabrics like used in my company’s sleepwear collection that wick moisture away from the body so you stay dry and comfortable. The same fabric is used for wounds and burns in hospitals.
As I write this on my small mobile computer, 40 years ago a computer took up a whole room. Computer science was a new major in college and DOS was like a foreign language.
A golden record was attached to Voyager 1. In it were pictures of humans, animals and art and recordings. Controversial at the time was including Chuck Berry singing ‘Johnny Be Good’. The controversy was the song was thought to be too ”adolescent” but Carl Sagan working with NASA squelched it. Yes that Carl Sagan!
Air travel, although faster and less smoky in the cabin, is still not as fast as I thought 40 years ago. It certainly is not as fast as ‘beam me down Scotty’! I thought Voyager 1 would pave the way for passenger space travel.
I have my pajamas and a current passport so I am ready for my space travel. Come on technology, what I don’t have is another 40 years!
Do you remember the Voyager 1 launch? Are you ready and waiting for space travel?
