Remember when you bought your first home? Remember when you moved to your place that was new or at least new to you? Remember the enthusiasm? Remember how exciting it was to decorate or remodel? I am trying to muster that enthusiasm up again with a new roof.
Let’s face it putting on a new roof is not sexy in the world of home ownership. It isn’t like remodeling or even installing new appliances. It is just a whole lot of money for something that is necessary but does not happen to have much sex appeal!
I have been whimpering about the cost of the roof for a bit and all my friends and family are sick of hearing about it. One friend topped me with her new septic tank as being the un-sexiest use of home ownership money. I concede to that but the roof is $20,000.00 and her new septic was only $3,00.00!
Home ownership is not for everyone. When you buy a home you know you have to maintain it. Things break, become old and have to be replaced. This financial responsibility makes home ownership not the right fit for everyone. That said, I love my home and hope to age out in it so the new roof has to be installed.
For the last month I have been looking at roofs. I have narrowed my choices down. Now I will stop at a house and ring the door and ask them about their roof if I think it is one of my finalists. It is not surprising given the cost but I was initially surprised when homeowners would readily chat with me a stranger on their front stoop about their roof!
We don’t have any leaks but we have a 25-year shake roof and it has been 28 years. The new roof will be a 50-year roof. I will never see it age out but the 30-year roof is just not a texture I like! Yes I am talking about texture, color, and depth in regards to a roof. Maybe I have put back some of the sex appeal of home ownership after all?
Have you had to replace your roof? Did you suffer sticker shock? Do you agree that it is a huge unsexy investment expense?
