Full disclosure, I am a long time supporter of Hillary. I voted for her and have read all her books. This is still not a book review but my bias needs to be acknowledged. What I got from ‘What Happened’ is what I think really happened.
Hillary is several years older then me but still a baby boomer. Women of our generation are not taught to blow their own horn. That in a nutshell is what I think what happened.
In the book Hillary acknowledges in one of the debates when Trump was looming, trying to intimidate her that she should have told him to “back off”. Yes she should have but being a woman of this generation she was polite and following the rules.
Back to not blowing her own horn, Hillary’s experience going back her whole adult life was never brought to the attention time and time again like her opponent. I wish she really had gone toe to toe on that with Trump.
She mentions in the book that she didn’t have the heart-warming back-story of Barak Obama or her husband. Their stories capturing the phrase, “Only in America” could a boy like this rise to become president of the United States. I wanted to shout at her and tell her not to apologize because she came from a loving home with 2 loving parents. I wanted to scream, ‘Please do not overlook all the hurdles you had to overcome because you are a woman to get to this place in history, running for president!’
Hillary of course acknowledges these facts. Hindsight gives a unique perspective. Up against Trump all protocol of past campaigns and strategy went out the window. She states she and her team were stumped in the moment.
At one point in the book she makes a point and then says “Hmmm”. ‘Hmmm’ is woman shorthand for ‘I don’t need to go all over this again because you are not stupid’. In this campaign she needed to be clear of all the ‘Hmmm’ moments and reiterate her expertise again and again like her opponent.
Did you read the book? What is your take on what happened in ‘What Happened’?
