And apples a saucing
And corn coming out of our ears
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
For me right now, late August/early September is really the most wonderful time of the year. I look forward to this time of year all year long!
I know the song is about Christmas, but Christmas, or any other time of the year pales in comparison. This time of the year I am one with my garden. I am processing, eating and picking vegetables every day. I am thinking of new dishes, new pickling and new combinations to use my produce at its’ peak!
The corn is the sweetest, the tomatoes the juiciest, the cucumbers the mildest, the green beans the tastiest right now. Really it only lasts 2-3 weeks when every vegetable is peak in my garden at once. During this time I rarely stray from my home. I am too busy.
Of course not every plant is successful. We had crop failure this year with cabbage and all squashes and I have only one pumpkin on the vine. My carrots seem undressed without a cabbage to mix into a slaw but such is the life of gardening. I can get rather philosophical on a full belly of fresh sweet corn!
All the work I do now I am appreciate over the winter months. This most wonderful time of the year is a slice in time of vegetable heaven from my garden. It is the hap-happiest season of all!
Are you a vegetable gardener? Do you find joy at the sight of filled canning jars? Is this the most wonderful time of the year for you?
